Somnia

You are explorers in your colorful, shady, and fearsome dreams. In Somnia, kids collect fragments of dreams and try to exit from their dream world to escape from the chasing Nightmare. You should choose to collect the fragments as many or as few as possible. But once you have collected too many, you would be caught inside your mind.

Somnia is a trick-taking game for 2 to 4 players, duration of 30 min approx. The game is based on Swiss traditional card game Mittlere Jass (aka Middler) and Molotov Jass. In 3- or 4-player game, 36 cards of 4 suits each having 0 to 20 points are equally dealt and played, the winner of each trick receiving all cards and their points. In 2-player game, 24 cards are used and each player draws a card per trick.

Your goal is to avoid becoming the “middler.” In 3-player game the 2nd pointed player loses, and in 4-player game the 2nd and 3rd pointed player lose. They are caught in the nightmare. Moreover, if you collect 100 or more points (151 points in total), you lose to get drowned into the depth of your dream. All players have 3 life points each and loser(s) of a deal pay 1 life point. The game continues until someone loses all their lives.

The trump suit Nightmare is not determined at first, but if someone cannot follow the suit led to sluff a card of other suit, that immediately becomes the Nightmare suit throughout the deal – i.e., ruffed. Some cards of the Nightmare suit promotes – their ranks change from 7 to 12, 5 to 11, with card points also changed from 2 to 20, 0 to 13.

There is no bidding, no exchange of cards, but the whole game is quite well balanced, flashy, and exciting. You can choose whether to win or not to win. Also, when one player wins many tricks you can cooperate with the others to let the top-runner lose. 3- and 4-player rules are written so as to closely reproduce the original game but make it much easier to play. 2-player rules are our original variant, an hommage to the traditional game.

Thanks to Sai Beppu, a graphic designer, the game has been dressed in mysterious mood. Many peculiar and kawaii characters and motifs in box and cards are inspired from horror JRPGs and movies.
